CV NEWS FEED // More than two months into President Donald Trump’s second term, roughly half of Americans are happy with his immigration policies, but they are less pleased with how he has handled the economy, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.
The poll found that about nine in 10 Republicans and two in 10 Democrats approve of Trump’s stance on immigration, while seven in 10 Republicans and one in 10 Democrats approve of his handling of the economy. Overall, only about four in 10 Americans said they approved of his approach to the economy and trade negotiations, especially in regard to his promises of increased tariffs.
According to AP News, many voting blocs flipped to support Trump in the 2024 election based on his promises of restoring the economy and targeting inflation, especially after former President Joe Biden garnered a net negative rating on his handling of the economy. While Trump’s approach to the economy still receives a higher approval rating than Biden’s, AP News reported that the criticisms could be “warning signs” for Trump.
“Trade negotiations with other countries is the issue on which he’s rated especially negatively, with about 6 in 10 U.S. adults saying they disapprove of his job performance,” AP News reported.
The outlet also reported that though many Americans still approve of Trump’s stricter immigration policies, “the Republican president’s threats to impose tariffs — which have been accompanied by tumbling consumer confidence and wild stock market swings — might be erasing his advantage on another issue that he made central to his winning 2024 campaign.”
Trump’s management of the federal government, foreign conflicts, and Social Security also received about four in 10 Americans’ support, similar to his overall job performance ratings.
