CV NEWS FEED // Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty against Luigi Magione, who is accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Bondi announced in an April 1 statement. “After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
The state of New York charged Mangione with murder as an act of terrorism and weapons offenses and Mangione pleaded not guilty in December 2024, Reuters reported. The state does not have the death penalty for state charges.
Mangione also faces an indictment in Manhattan’s federal court, which could result in the death penalty if he is convicted. Reuters states that Mangione has not yet been asked to enter a plea for the federal charges.
Reuters adds that Mangione’s lawyers have not yet responded to Bondi’s statement.
Thompson was shot and killed on Dec. 4, 2024, in Manhattan, as CatholicVote previously reported, and Mangione was arrested Dec. 9 as the primary suspect in the murder.
CatholicVote also reported that Mangione is part of a highly prominent Catholic family from Baltimore, Maryland. UnitedHealthcare named Tim Noel as its new CEO Jan. 23.
