CV NEWS FEED // The cause for the canonization of Sister Clare Crockett, an Irish missionary of the Congregation of the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother, will officially commence Jan. 25, 2025, Agenzia Fides recently reported.
Sr. Clare died in April 2016 at the age of 33 during an earthquake that killed hundreds and injured thousands along Ecuador’s coast. Sr. Clare was killed while she was in Playa Prieta, where she and her congregation operated a school that was completely destroyed.
Born Nov. 14, 1982, in Derry, Ireland, Clare Crockett left a promising acting career at the age of 18 to devote herself entirely to God. She joined the Servant Sisters in 2001, where her fellow sisters observed her remarkable transformation.
“Over the last eight years, many people have asked for a study on the holiness of Sister Clare,” said Sister Kristen Gardner (SHM), postulator of the cause. “This request of the faithful is a clear sign from the Lord.”
Sr. Kristen Gardner is also author of Sr. Clare’s biography Sr. Clare Crockett: Alone with Christ Alone, which includes many of Sr. Clare’s personal writings.
The inaugural ceremony for her canonization cause is set to take place Jan. 12, 2025, at the Cathedral of the Holy Children Justo and Pastore in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. Bishop Antonio Prieto Lucena will preside.
The road to canonization for Sr. Clare must begin with her beatification, a process begun by gathering testimonies of those who knew her and reports of possible miracles attributed to her intercession.
Sister Maria Luisa Belmonte (SHM) reflected on Sr. Clare’s spiritual growth, stating that while she was always “very cheerful and open,” her background in acting had contributed to her being somewhat self-centered and a bit arrogant.
“Before she became a candidate,” Sr. Maria Luisa explained, “she always sought the limelight. However, in the last encounters with her I noticed that she always tried to put herself in the background so as not to attract attention. She had become an example of obedience and availability.”
Sr. Maria Luisa also recalled Sr. Clare’s willingness to “give everything for the Lord, with a big smile, without seeking special recognition in any way.”
“Clare was distinguished by her willingness to serve and her generosity, especially in Ecuador, where she was struck by the earthquake while caring for some girls in her community,” Sr. Maria Luisa noted.
Sr. Clare’s life will be further examined through testimonies from individuals who report receiving spiritual graces, including healings and conversions, through her intercession, with accounts coming from various countries, including Spain, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, and Peru.
