CV NEWS FEED // President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, is a devout Catholic with a special devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Landau, who was born in Spain, is the former Ambassador of the United States to Mexico. According to Voz, he has extensive experience in Latin American foreign policy and will work with Secretary of State nominee Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to ensure national security.
Landau is a lifelong Catholic, as he told law professor Max Raskin in a 2023 interview. Landau reaffirmed his Catholic identity in a Nov. 1 X post, responding to Trump’s post commemorating the Feast of All Saints.
“Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, has entered the chat,” Landau posted underneath Trump’s message. He included an image of a newspaper article in his post, which reported on his visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
However, another X user questioned the deepness of Landau’s faith.
“Are you Catholic Mr. Ambassador, or was it a diplomatic visit for political issues?” the X user asked in Spanish.
Landau immediately responded, “Yes, I am Catholic and a Guadalupano [devotee of Our Lady of Guadalupe].”
He also attached an image from 2021 with a quote about his time serving as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.
“I give infinite thanks to Our Lady of Guadalupe for having heard my prayers when I asked her to appoint me Ambassador of the United States in Mexico,” Landau had written in the quote under the image. “It has been an unforgettable experience for our family and we will always have Mexico in our hearts.”
According to the New York Times, Landau served as ambassador under Trump from 2019 to 2021. He enjoyed a three-decade career as a lawyer prior to his involvement with U.S. foreign policy.
Trump nominated Landau for Deputy Secretary of State Dec. 8. In an X post the same day, Landau said that he is “deeply honored by, and grateful for, this nomination and the opportunity to work with Senator @marcorubio to implement President @realdonaldtrump’s foreign policy agenda.”
