CV NEWS FEED // Luigi Mangione was charged Dec. 9 with second-degree murder in the brazen shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He faces four other charges.
CNN reports that Mangione is being held in a single cell under maximum security at State Correctional Institution – Huntingdon in Pennsylvania.
In addition to one count of murder, Mangione faces charges of two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is being held without bail.
Mangione’s family issued a statement after his arrest.
“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” wrote Nino Mangione, the suspect’s cousin and a Maryland State delegate. “We offer prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news.”
The shooting occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Dec. 4 outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
A New York Police Department intelligence report said that Mangione appeared to view the murder as a challenge to the insurance company’s “power games,” CNN reports.
Mangione was found with a three-page, handwritten manifesto, as CatholicVote previously reported, when he was arrested Dec. 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee recognized him from the pictures of the suspect circulating online.
According to CNN, the intelligence report stated Mangione “appeared to view the targeted killing of the company’s highest-ranking representative as a symbolic takedown and a direct challenge to its alleged corruption.”
The report added that Mangione asserted in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty.” The assessment was based on his manifesto and his social media pages.
