At the invitation of Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, and in preparation for Advent, over 5,000 people went to confession in a single twelve-hour period at the Cathedral of Mexico City.
Some penitents stood in line for up to four hours to receive the sacrament.
One guy who hadn’t been to confession for 25 years said it felt good to be rid of all those sins.
I bet it did, and I think he’s on to something. Maybe other people would find the same joy if instead of agitating for the Church to accommodate their sins in the name of “mercy” they just went to confession and experienced the peace and happiness of true mercy.
According to reports, the archdiocese plans to repeat the Advent service next year, with the addition of exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
This is just fantastic, and I bet Cardinal Rivera was elated. And who wouldn’t be? Unless you’re Davy Crockett, it’s always a good thing when 5,000 Mexicans suddenly show up at your church.
“Uh-oh, not good. Maybe if I keep smiling like this they’ll just go to confession and leave me alone.”
