CV NEWS FEED // In a historic decision on November 14 following a “heated debate” on the matter, Toronto’s City Council officially declared December as Christian Heritage Month, according to a recent news release from Christian Music Festival.
The unanimous approval of Christian Heritage Month was the culmination of an effort spearheaded by Christian Music Festival CEO Molly Banerjei, who rallied support from a coalition of volunteers, pastors, faith leaders, and community members from diverse backgrounds around the country.
Banerjei expressed her joy following the council’s decision, stating, “As a proud Christian Canadian, this moment fills me with hope and gratitude.”
“This is not just a celebration of Christianity; it’s about recognizing the contributions of Christian communities to every aspect of Canadian society,” said Banerjei. “By celebrating Christian Heritage Month, we honor the diversity that makes Canada strong and the faith that has shaped this great nation.”
This declaration places Toronto alongside over 30 municipalities across Canada that have also officially recognized December as Christian Heritage Month. In these areas, flag-raising ceremonies will be held to commemorate the occasion.
Banerjei expressed particular appreciation for Councillor Lily Cheng, recognizing her as a “powerful champion” who brought clarity and valuable perspective during the heated debate. She highlighted Cheng’s unwavering support as instrumental to the success of the initiative.
“There’s so much good and beauty in Christianity,” Cheng said. “So, I don’t think it’s something to be ashamed of to say I’m Christian. This is an important day for our city and the Canadian people.”
