Most faithful Catholics agree that the world would be a better place if more of us paid more careful attention to the Church’s social teaching. It is hard, however, to get even very serious Catholics to do the reading and study necessary for them to understand the Church’s social teaching. It would seem that some creative new approach is required, and it would seem that Omar Gutierrez has found it.
Gutierrez is the author of a delightful book that introduces us to the principles of Catholic social teaching through the lives of the saints: The Urging of Christ’s Love: The Saints and the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church. His emphasis is not so much on the exposition of doctrines or texts, but on telling the stories of saints who have exemplified the principles contained in the Church’s teaching. Here he follows the example of the best of teachers. Jesus, after all, frequently resorted to stories in order to make his point.
You can see the book here.
Also, I have a review of it at Homiletic and Pastoral Review, which you can find here (you have to scroll down to it, but it is there).
