CV NEWS FEED // The Vatican is reportedly cutting the salaries of the curia cardinals by about 10%, according to the Brussels Times.
The Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported that the Vatican’s Secretariat for Economic Affairs Maximino Caballero sent a letter announcing the pay cut of several hundred euros, international publishing outlet english.katholisch reported. The letter describes the pay cut as “a necessary sign of willingness to serve” amid the Vatican’s economic revisions, english.katholisch reported.
Reuters reported that Caballero explained in the letter that the pay cut comes at the request of Pope Francis. The change in salary, which only affects about 20 cardinals in total, will be implemented at the beginning of November.
Reuters reported in September that Pope Francis penned a letter to all the Church’s cardinals, asking them to undergo efforts to achieve a “zero deficit” agenda for the Vatican and explaining the importance of the “implementation of ethical policies that allow for improving the economic performance of existing assets.”
“On the cost reduction side, we need to give a concrete example so that our service is carried out with a spirit of essentiality, avoiding the superfluous and selecting our priorities well,” Pope Francis also wrote.
Pope Francis had also cut the curia’s salaries by 10% in March 2021, according to Vatican News.
