CV NEWS FEED // More American young adults are tending to get their news from TikTok, new data from the Pew Research Center show.
Pew surveyed 10,658 U.S. adults from July 15 to Aug. 4 and asked them where they regularly get their news. Seventeen percent of the total number surveyed said they get their news from TikTok, compared with just 3% who said the same thing in 2020.
Among young adults aged 18 to 29, 39% said they now use TikTok for news, compared with 9% in the same age group who said the same thing in 2020. Adults aged 30 to 49 were less likely to get their news off TikTok, with only 19% reporting in 2024 that they use the social media platform for news.
“News consumption is also trending upward when looking at TikTok users, specifically. Around half of TikTok users (52%) now say they regularly get news there, up from 43% last year and just 22% in 2020,” Pew reported.
Pew additionally found that those who use TikTok are more likely to get their news from the app than Facebook users are to get their news from Facebook, but X users are more likely to get their news from X than TikTok users are to get news from TikTok.
“Since 2020, no social media platform we’ve studied has seen faster growth in the share of Americans who regularly turn to it for news,” Pew noted.
