CV NEWS FEED // Bishop Daniel Henry Mueggenborg of the Diocese of Reno recently discussed the Catholic Church’s efforts to combat Nevada’s pro-abortion constitutional amendment.
In EWTN’s Pro-Life Weekly, the Bishop discussed the Nevada ballot measure that host Montse Alvarado stated “would establish a right for abortion until fetal viability,” which is usually around 24 weeks, in the state’s Constitution.
Bishop Mueggenborg outlined three initiatives that the Catholic Church in Nevada has taken to oppose the abortion measure.
“Back in the spring, we [the Church] participated in a state-wide initiative encouraging people to decline to sign the petition for the amendment itself,” he said. When, despite their efforts, the petition was approved to be on the ballot, the Church moved on to other efforts.
During the summer, the Church created videos in English and Spanish that explained why people should oppose the initiative and encouraged people to inform other Nevadans about the ballot, he said.
“This has to be a broader-based resistance to this initiative than just the Catholic Church,” Bishop Mueggeborg stated.
The Church’s third initiative is working with other religions that hold pro-life values to oppose the initiative.
“This is gonna require a massive amount of education because the disinformation is extensive,” the Bishop noted, adding that in the weeks leading up to the election, the pro-abortion rhetoric “will only be increasing.”
The Bishop explained that in the Diocese of Reno, the Catholic Church supports mothers in need through the organizations Walking with Moms and Catholic Charities.
He offered encouragement for the pro-life movement, telling pro-lifers “to remember that this isn’t just about a legal fight, this is about a moral fight for the conscience of our country and certainly for our Catholic population.” He added that the people need to be educated “to come to see the beauty and value of human life, and protecting and defending human life at all its stages.”
