CV NEWS FEED // U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) recently was awarded the “Distinguished Christian Statesman Award” at the Museum of the Bible.
A press release from the Center for Christian Statesmanship explained that their organization “has annually spotlighted Christian leaders serving the nation since 1996,” with other recipients including Governor Mike Huckabee, Sen. Tim Scott, and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
Upon receiving the award, Sen. Hawley pointed to the importance of faith in the United States. “Faith is what holds this country together. The Left’s attempt to eradicate religion divides America. That’s what’s divisive. Faith actually is a great unifier in our national life,” the senator said.
“I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States,” he continued. “That means also defending the principles, the ideals and the realities on which that Constitution is founded. And the witness of the Bible is absolutely foundational to all of that.”
Sen. Hawley, who was the former Attorney General of Missouri, has a pro-life and pro-family record, and in June he signed a letter urging the Senate Appropriations Committee to maintain pro-life provisions in the fiscal year of 2025, as CatholicVote previously reported.
In 2023, he accused the FBI of targeting traditionalist Catholics as “violent extremists,” according to his website.
In the Senate, he addressed the director of the FBI over a report that described targeting traditional Catholics, and he said, “Good heavens, Director, this is one of the most outrageous targetings – you have mobilized your division, the most powerful law enforcement division in the world, against traditionalist Catholics.”
Sen. Hawley also stated to the FBI director, “your memo labels traditional Catholics as racially, and ethnically, motivated violent extremists in need of investigation […] You have repeatedly said ‘we don’t target churches, we don’t list churches,’ [but] they’re listed in the memo.”
