CV NEWS FEED // The 32nd annual International Week of Prayer and Fasting, themed “Conquering the Darkness: Triumph of Mercy, Hope, and Healing,” is set to take place October 12-20.
According to a September 10 emailed press release, the global event, co-founded by Ted and Maureen Flynn, aims to unite Christians worldwide in a movement of prayer and fasting to address various global challenges.
“Right now there is an escalating urgency to draw all faithful people to an intensified week of prayer and fasting,” the Flynns said in the press release. “It may feel darker than ever, but with prayer and fasting, Our Lady says we can conquer the darkness.”
According to the press release, the week will commence with an in-person event at St. Mary of Sorrows in Fairfax, Virginia, on October 12. The day’s activities will include prayer, Eucharistic adoration, Mass celebrated by Bishop Emeritus Robert J. Baker, and the Rosary.
The event will also feature talks from speakers such as Fr. Dan Leary and filmmaker James Wahlberg.
“The spiritual weapons of our age are basic: prayer and fasting,” Wahlberg stated, according to the press release. “The grace to know how to war spiritually isn’t enough, we have to encourage others to pick up these practices together to battle the evil that confronts our world today.”
Ted and Maureen Flynn encourage both in-person and virtual participation, sharing that in addition to the live event, the week will include virtual talks from additional speakers such as Dr. Antone Raymundo and Fr. Jason Lewis.
“Every year we bring this world-wide movement of prayer and fasting to Catholics and other Christian peoples to inspire prayer and fasting for world peace, conversion of hearts and the building up of a culture of life,” the Flynns said, noting that the speakers will offer insight regarding the practical applications of fasting and prayer.
The Flynns explained that while prayer and fasting may appear to be outdated methods for facilitating change, they are actually essential practices for Christians in the spiritual battle against evil.
“People do not need to feel powerless in the face of the many grave evils we are witnessing around the world,” the Flynns said. “We can change the course of history, world events, and appeal to the merciful heart of God as we pray and fast. Our Lady has instructed us and assured us of this.”
