CV NEWS FEED // Cardinal Timothy Dolan will celebrate a Mass honoring grandparents and the elderly at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on September 8.
The Good News Room reports that the Mass “aims to recognize the wisdom, love, and guidance that older generations provide to their families and society,” and “reflects a growing recognition of the importance of intergenerational connections and the unique perspectives that older adults bring to our communities.”
The Cathedral will have reserved seats for the elderly. While grandparents and their families are especially encouraged to attend, all members of the community are welcome.
Ted Musco, director of the Archdiocese of New York’s Office of Family Life, said in a statement to The Good News Room, “Don’t miss this opportunity to pray with Cardinal Dolan and the rest of our Catholic community as we take time to celebrate the elderly and grandparents with our families and communities.”
The article further reports that Pope Francis established the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021. The Church in the United States observes the World Day on the Sunday after Labor Day.
According to Vatican News, after he announced the World Day, Pope Francis mentioned the role of the elderly prophets Simeon and Anna in the Feast of the Presentation, saying, “the Holy Spirit even today stirs up thoughts and words of wisdom in the elderly,” and added that the voice of the elderly “sings the praises of God and preserves the roots of the peoples.”
