CV NEWS FEED // Christian former NFL coach Tony Dungy recently slammed Florida’s abortion ballot initiative on X, saying that it is “written with vague and deceptive terms” that will fool and mislead voters.
Dungy’s August 30 post was in response to an indication from President Donald Trump that he may support Florida’s Amendment 4, which would allow abortion for any reason any time before viability, generally understood to be around 24 weeks of pregnancy.
According to Florida’s Voice, Trump recently said that the current Florida abortion law, which bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, does not give women enough time.
“I’m gonna be voting that we need more than six weeks,” Trump, a Florida resident, told Florida’s Voice.
Dungy posted that he believes Trump did not read the proposed amendment carefully, adding:
I predict when Donald Trump reads and understands what this bill will actually do he’ll change course and vote no.
In addition to opening up abortions to roughly the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, the bill does not make provisions for parental involvement in their minor child’s decision to get an abortion.
While the bill’s summary states that parents will still be notified if their minor child is seeking an abortion, parental consent is not required.
“Don’t be fooled by terms like “viability”, “healthcare providers” & parental “notification” that are not defined,” Dungy added on X. “This bill will drastically change the abortion landscape in Florida if it passes.”
