CV NEWSFEED // On Friday LOOPCast hosts Tom Pogasic, Erika Ahern, and CatholicVote Vice-President Joshua Mercer went live to discuss the first presidential debate of 2024.
The debate marked the first time a former president and sitting president went toe-to-toe in a live discussion.
Mercer kicked off the conversation by addressing Biden’s poor performance.
“I have never seen a presidential candidate flub and flounder as badly in a presidential debate,” he reported. “These same two people debated each other two years ago. And I’m gonna say it, four years ago Joe Biden did better than Donald Trump in the debates.”
Pogasic recalled the hope for Trump to “win” against Biden in the 2020 presidential debates. “The 2020 election, I remember … people were just so hopeful that Trump would win.”
The disappointment from 2020 was notable but contrasted Thursday’s performance by both candidates.
Pogasic asked Ahern to explain the car crash of a showing by Biden. “What was the crux of what just happened on the debate stage?”
Ahern summarized the debate for viewers.
“Going in, I was trying to be careful I wasn’t going to set too low of a bar for Biden because he has in the past rallied, like at the State of the Union,” Ahern explained. “So you don’t want to go into it thinking it’s going to be a disaster… It was a disaster.”

Ahern described her initial apprehensions around left-leaning CNN’s potential performance. However, according to Ahern, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash asked tough questions and did well in their roles as moderators.
“They were asking tough questions from both guys and came right after Biden on immigration, and that was around 9:10 pm Eastern Standard Time, so this is ten minutes in. I think that was when the debate ended, though.”
Ahern quipped and referenced Pogasic’s live statuses on X during the debate.
In the X post, Biden can be seen rambling and stumbling over his words, visibly confused, while trying to answer a pertinent question: Why should voters trust Biden to solve the immigration crisis?
Trump responded with a classic zinger, “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence and I don’t think he knows what he said either.”
Biden’s incoherent performance on stage has only affirmed the public’s fear of him being reelected.
“If you want a summary, that’s pretty much it.”
Ahern recounted the 90-minute debate in three words, “It was brutal.”
