What is the source of our rights? Do they come from God? Or are they merely a product of human agreement.
This is, admittedly, a difficult philosophical question. It is not, however, a difficult historical question for an American. Or at least it is not supposed to be. The Declaration of Independence states unequivocally that human beings are “endowed by their creator” with rights. Indeed, the Declaration holds that this is a “self-evident” truth.
It has recently been denied, however, by a member of America’s elite, CNN journalist Chris Cuomo. I don’t mean that Cuomo says that the Declaration is wrong. Rather, he argues as if it does not even exist. This is remarkable behavior for a man who had all the benefits of an elite education from childhood.
I have written about this at greater length at Public Discourse.
