CV NEWS FEED // According to a 2023 survey conducted by Pew Research, more than two to one Americans say abortion pills should be legal in their state in the aftermath of the Dobbs decision which overturned Roe v. Wade.
“Overall, 53% of adults say medication abortion – that is, the use of a prescription pill or a series of pills to end a pregnancy – should be legal in their state,” a report of the survey results stated, “while fewer than half as many (22%) say it should be illegal.”
“About a quarter (24%) say they aren’t sure,” the report added.
Surprisingly, US Catholics are among those calling for the legalization of abortion pills. According to the survey results, “Catholics are more likely to say abortion medication should be legal than illegal in their state (46% vs. 26%).”
“While Protestants overall offer mixed views about whether medication abortion should be legal in their state,” the report continued, “white evangelical Protestants are about twice as likely to say it should be illegal than legal (50% vs. 23%).”
Among Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents, 73% say abortion pills should be legal in their state. Less than half as many Republican voters (35%) say they supported legalized abortion medication.
In addition, younger adults were more likely than older adults to favor legalized abortion pills, since about “two-thirds (66%) of adults under 30 say abortion pills should be legal, compared with half of adults 30 and older.”
The report continued to note that only 12% of American women under 30 say abortion pills should be illegal, while 71% were in favor of legalization.
As CatholicVote previously reported, chemical abortions have surged since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, with a combined total of 6,533 more requests for abortion pills in the United States during July and August in 2022.
