We’re watching the news with you…
Words are not adequate.
As I write this, reports suggest that as many as 15 American soldiers have been killed in a terrorist attack, along with many more innocent Afghans waiting to escape the Taliban-controlled country. Many more are likely wounded.
It’s the deadliest day for our troops since a helicopter attack on August 5, 2011.
The finger-pointing and deflection are already underway. An MSNBC analyst even tweeted the callous hashtag #DealWithIt. Meanwhile, hours after the explosion, Nancy Pelosi gave a speech in San Francisco filled with jokes, talking about an historic “attack” on voting rights.
What is certain is that the consequences of an utterly incompetent and mismanaged exit from Afghanistan will be with us for years, if not decades.
But at this moment our hearts and prayers are with the families that have lost someone they loved. We pray for the repose of those souls senselessly killed, and for consolation for their loved ones. The sacrifices of our brave men and women in uniform, and those of their families, humble us all.
It’s easy to forget that our military is a volunteer force.
Those who serve selflessly choose to put their lives at risk.
And today, some of our finest gave what Lincoln called the “last full measure of devotion.”
May Our Lady intercede and protect all those in harm’s way.
