CV NEWS FEED // Nebraska state legislators will gather this weekend for the 5th-annual Pro-Life Coffee program to discuss with hundreds of attendees how to combat the state’s pro-abortion ballot initiative and promote pro-life legislation.
Legislators and citizens will gather at the Riverside Golf Club in Grand Island, NE, for the event on February 17. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the program begins at 9. This event is open to the public, and a “light breakfast” and refreshments will be provided.
According to a press release in the Lexington Clipper Herald, “local and statewide pro-life groups will host hundreds of constituents, State Auditor Mike Foley and area state senators for a morning program to address vital pro-life legislation in Nebraska, strategies to defeat the pro-abortion ballot initiative and Q&A from constituents.”
The Diocese of Grand Island is sponsoring the event, along with Students for Life of America, Nebraska Right to Life, Grand Island Right to Life, Nebraska Catholic Conference, Nebraska Family Alliance, Shoot 4 Life, and South Central Nebraska Right to Life.
Abortion is currently legal in Nebraska up to the twelfth week of pregnancy. However, pro-abortion advocates are working to enshrine the right to abortion up to “fetal viability,” in the Nebraska state constitution through a ballot initiative.
Nebraska Republican Governor Jim Pillen denounced this pro-abortion ballot initiative in November especially for using “vague and deceptive language” that “could throw open the doors to brutal late-term abortions”. Pillen said he would fight the ballot initiative “with every ounce of energy that I have,” adding that Nebraska is “a pro-life state.”
Pillen was elected governor in late 2022 and signed the legislation protecting life after 12 weeks in May of 2023. In 2022, then-Lt. Gov. Mike Foley signed a proclamation recognizing a pro-life flag for Nebraska.
